I'm not actively working on this feature at the moment, so if you need it, I can help you find a developer (or help you directly if you are a developer), and perhaps you can sponsor them.

I just mailed some developers to let them know that you are interested in sponsoring the addition of the feature. Hopefully they will contact you and you can discuss price with them.

I too am interested in free tagging.

Good Day to All,

If anyone is interested in getting this going. I need help in organizing it. Most I could chip in is $200.00 maybe more if I sell stuff on eBay. I really need this feature badly or is there already a substitute for this feature? Please contact me at mgoltra at yahoo dot com.

Check this node http://drupal.org/node/258373 for a low cost solution
that enables free-tagging in cck-taxonomy.

Haven't done much testing, but it seems to work at first glance.
