I am trying to create a simple main page where I have rss/facebook feeds on the left, facebook twitter links on the right, and nothing underneath. Unfortunately, if you don't specific a main page, Drupal displays this banner "Welcome to...". If you do add a basic page for the main page, then you get crap at the bottom.

Here is my current page: www.isip.piconepress.com

I do not want a basic page to appear below the aggregator /social media links.

My question is this: How do I make a main page without getting the Welcome message automatically inserted?

It is not clear to me if I make a basic page for the main page, how I insert objects like the aggregator, onto that page without writing html code. Page layout should be easier than this.

BTW: I was able to make this work on v7.14, but when I upgraded to v7.15, it started putting the welcome message in. Not good...

You said you are flexible

You said you are flexible working with other version of Drupal, then you should have known this or may be I am not understanding your need.
But solution of this is quite easy.
You just have to create a node with what ever content you like. You assign the blocks in the region where you want and restrict that to created node of yours(if you don't want that be seen at other place).
Go to "Configuration->Site Information", you will find FRONT PAGE setting in there. Just complete the URL with your recent made Node number/name.

Now your created node is the front page of the website, without any welcome message or anything.

If you have some other requirement then please elaborate.
