There are there settings on the "Configure canvas" form which affect padding:

  1. Column separation with default value set to 0.5em
  2. Region separation with default value set to 0.5em
  3. Row separation with default value set to 0.5em

What is expected behavior when we clear "0.5em" text? My understanding is that if I remove something, it should not occur which means no separation == no padding.

I think the reason those default to 0.5 is so that flexible layouts created before those settings existed got the proper values. You can put 0em in, if you like. But I think at best I would leave the default as is and put in a message saying that it will default to 0.5em if empty.
