I'd like a clean installation of Mass Contact, but I can't get rid of the old version - it remains in the list of modules despite being 'uninstalled' and despite being deleted from the /modules/ folder. While in this state, I don't appear to able to install a new version, so I wondered how to *completely remove* the module before starting from scratch.

You need to make sure you have removed all copies of the module, which might have ended up in multiple places. Look in both /modules/ and /sites/*/modules/ and remove it from where ever you find it.
