How can I use a cck node with panels. I have some google ads in blocks that I would like to place before, next to and underneath my cck node display. Since the cck node is not a block or a view, I can't seem to use it with panels. Am I missing something?

You can add nodes to panels in a similar way to blocks and views - look for the option on the panels edit page.

It's also possible to make "full node" page views and add those in like any other view.

I forgot to say that I need to use an argument with the node. My site has a directory with a 'merchant' content type that I created so I need the panels to be dynamic, i.e. the node for whichever merchant you select from the menu will appear inside the panels block. Does that make sense?

You should be able to make a "full node" view, with taxonomy term as the argument, I don't think panels 1 can do this though quite the way you want, but it's definitely on it's way in panels 2.
