It isn't clear that the when there are "100" results promised for a category that it includes the subclasses. The amounts of results matches the number, but it may not match the "children" categories.
This was handled by taking taxonomy terms and verbosely describing the taxonomy, so that if a node belonged to taxonomy term A, then it also would belong to the parents.
Inferencing offers an interesting alternative, which is available in Sesame, but would have to be written for ARC.
