Can you tell me if there will ever be a 5.x version of this code; or if anyone has developed a 5.x version outside of this project?

There is a contrib module called "image import" in image module.

There is another module called image_import which is now a sub-module of the image module. Simply download the image module and activate it.

The sub-module is missing lots of features and I wish those two project will be merged. See my opinions and more details about the latest module overhaul which supports mass image bulk upload .

Let's unite the two projects.
