I found the section in the code where I can override the depth - yet it doesn't seem to be working. Taxonomy has somehting like this as well and I was able to get that working. But I would perfer to just control depth in the Articles mode. is this possible?

I have added this feature to the 4.6 version of the Article module, which I will release shortly after the official release of Drupal 4.6.

You can now select the number of levels to be displayed on any given index page from the settings page. So if you select 1 level, you will only see one level of the Article term tree at a time. You can still navigate down to see all the children, but you can not skip ahead.
