I agree that a standardized solution for this problem in usernode would be helpful. in a newsblog you seldom want the item "usernode" to appear - calling it just "user" would be more helpful.
a) With usernode you are able to create userlist with views module. There you can also create lists and feeds that behave the same way your current lists and feeds do, except that you can choose which nodetypes should appear there. Of course, this is not convenient, as you I would prefer a solution in usernode itself.
b) As far as I remember in the usernode package you can find documentation on how to avoid notifications.

fagothere is no way to do this apart from configuring the used staff to restrict it to node types != usernode.
