Hi.

The primary symptom is that the images don't display in any format. No thumbnail, preview, or original.

The log doesn't so any errors when creating the content:
"content 09/15/2007 - 17:55 image: added file_name user_name"

But it does show an error message when ever an attempt is made to view the image:
"warning access denied 09/15/2007 - 17:55 system/files/images/file_name user_name"

I was following this issue http://drupal.org/node/160671 because I was seeing some "Derivative images were regenerated..." messages in the log. But I don't think it what I saw is our log was excessive or abnormal. The firs thing I checked was permissions of course. Everything looked OK but I manually set all folders and files to 775 just in case. When that didn't work, I tried 777 as a quick test before returning them to 775. I also tried uninstalling the Image 5.x-1.5 version and installing the 5.x-1.x-dev version. But it didn't seem to help. I also ran the update.php script just to be sure. I've also disabled an other Image related modules as well like Image Gallery, Image Attach, etc.

so you've got private file transfers enabled... where is the image folder relative to drupal's root?

Same issue with private file transfers enabled or not. drupal's root at default place.

Could it be a issue with small images? The orginal image is smaller than a preview image -> no preview image generated even with Derivative images regeneration. When I see it as a content, I can choose # Thumbnail or # Petit_format_160 then if I click Thumbnail, the choice is bigger: # Original # Preview # Petit_format_160 # Moyen_format_540 # Grand_format_810 even if there is no image associated.
Could it be a problem for image to deliver good image if it not manage image sizes correctly.

For me the size of the image seems to be irrelevant. My preview size is the default 640x480, and yet images that are 1024x768 are not displaying. No thumbnail, no preview, no original size.

The symptom presents itself in the following manner.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I must admit that that I'm getting a bit frustrated. You see, I can't agree that this is a duplicate. of node/170659 for reasons that I've already stated. Perhaps a side-by-side comparison will help.

The node you refer to http://drupal.org/node/170659 states: "people get "access denied" on previews on normal image node pages - if the defined preview size is larger than the original image"
This is not the case with the our errors. As I stated in my last post, we get the error we when the image is 1024x 768 and the preview is only 640x480.

Than node also states: "however, now people can also see originals which they shouldn't be able to access." As I said in my previous post, on our site you can't see *any* of the images submitted.

In spite of the fact that the one of the symptoms presented is "access denied" in the log file, this is clearly not another "Image not shown if original = preview" issue.

how about this, i'll roll a patch for 1.x-dev if you'll try it out. i'm fairly certain that it is the same issue. also if you've got the upload module enabled you'll need to grant the view attachments permission.

Funny you should mention the upload module, because I finally quit being stupid long enough to think that trying other attachments besides images. Guess what. No joy. Same error. At least we know it's not a problem with Image. :-) Thanks again for you help. I only hope that I didn't discover this too late to save you the trouble of working on a patch. If I didn't... I'm sorry. I spent the weekend doing non-computer related stuff... Mainly because I have no self-control.

Hmmm... I wonder if I can associate this with the other module with out starting all over again. ??? Can't hurt to try.

Wrath-BRIG-, I also have the same problem. Did you solve it yet?
I set up the drupal page und suddenly all pics were gone. It does not matter if I'm logged in as admin, or user or anonym. really strange thing!

Sorry Pinacol... As you can see Drewish stopped contributing to this thread. As a result of the lack of success here, I tried the forums. See: http://drupal.org/node/178639

I also had no success there. I recently suggested Drupal and the Case Tracker module to a client of mine. I was convinced that the fantastic features and great community would be a winning combination. I'm now very concerned in that I can't seem to find a resolution to what would seem like basic functionality.

As it is I'm running a crappy (nearly image less) site. If I weren't so busy I'd consider blowing it away and trying to either reinstall Drupal or perhaps try Joomla or Xoops. Right now I'm so busy with work that I can't stand to waste any more time on trying to find support for Drupal. If my client does indeed decide to use Drupal, I'm going to recommend they have a significant amount of their budget set aside to pay for support. Apparently the no-cost support is more limited than I realized.

Anyway, if you find an answer, I'd appreciate it if you could share. Thanks and good luck!

I am using Drupal 5.4 with Image module 1.6.

Under Administer > Site configuration > File system
File system path: sites/default/files
Download method: Private
Under Administer > Site configuration > Image
Default image path: images

Conclusions

I can Log In, upload and import images, and view all versions of the images in my galleries.
I have verified that the original, thumbnail and preview files are all placed in sites/default/files/images.
When I Log Out, I can no longer see the images in my Gallery.
The Recent log entries page shows "access denied" for "system/files/images/eddie_promopic4.jpg".
The src attribute of the img tags did not change. They are the same whether I am logged in, or not.
The only thing that changed is the current user's permissions (authenticated user vs. anonymous), so it has to be a problem with the code in Drupal that authorizes access to the sites/default/files folder when Download method is set to Private.
I also verified that this is not a unix filesystem permission issue or .htaccess issue. When logged out (anonymous) I can replace the url "system/files/images/eddie_promopic4.jpg" with "sites/default/files/images/eddie_promopic4.jpg" and it works just fine.

I don't think this issue belongs under "Upload".

I am moving this under Drupal, documenting the version, setting the component to file system, and changing it from support request to bug report because this is a very serious bug when it comes to Private file system implementations.

Solution

I did some digging through the source code, and this is not a problem, it's a lack of documentation. The Drupal upload module requires that your users have permission to "view uploaded files" in order to access/view files (in our case images) when "Download method" is set to "Private".

I had to give "anonymous" permission to "view uploaded files", which pretty much defeats the purpose of setting the File system > Download method: to Private. I believe that there should be a more granular way to control access to uploaded files, but this should fix the problem.

Feel free to re-open this ticket if this solution doesn't solve your problem.

Turns out it actually was related with upload ;)
