1. If I use image attach I will have a separate input field for images and will be able to link just 1 image - I can't use this one.
2. If I use image upload I will have loads of image nodes I don't need and no direct link to original sized image. If it was possible to completely hide image nodes if browsing by taxonomy term this would be borderline acceptable.
3. If I use cck + image field + image cache I get separate input field(s) just for image, I will have to define fixed number of image fields (not a good idea since attachment number will vary from 1 to ~40).
What I need is plain and simple:
1. A single upload dialog for all types of attachments - just as with upload module
2. If uploaded file is an image a thumbnail generated and displayed on attachment's list
3. No extra nodes (or at least no extra visible nodes)
4. File format icon for non-image attachments would be a great bonus
Any idea how to get at least first two done?
It has to be as idiot proof as possible - it's going to be a government site ;-)
