Processed colorbox node links remove standard link functionality

The problem:
When you right click on a link and choose open in a new window, you end up at a JSON response page.

The solution:
Can we somehow change the url to the colorbox url via an onclick or on colorbox open or similar function call, so that for hover and open in new window, the link looks and opens as it would without this module, and on open of colorbox, we get the JSON url in replacing it at the last moment?

I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature request, so feel free to update.
