Is there a drupal module that will decode VIN numbers? If not then I may have to work on one in the future I guess, but with my limited knowledge of php I am not sure how well that would go.

Hi Mink -

Did you come up with a solution? I scratched together a VIN (vehicle identification numbers) decoding module once, but never quite got it to a "production-ready" state... mostly for lack of a complete vehicle database or data store. I've got some new ideas for that aspect of it tho, relating to Drupal's big push into RDF data formats, so I was thinking of digging up my code and getting it officially contributed as a project.

Would love to know if there is any other interest in this sort of thing.

This would be an ultra-mega-killer module in my opinion.

I agree it seems getting a solid, regularly updated data source seems difficult.

have you come across anything promising in the realm of VIN data availability? I keep hoping to find something on freebase.com or infochimps.org or like service... something web-based & decently structured/formatted for decoder consumption -- ideally maintained by the manufacturers themselves, I see no reason to hoard this kind of data.
