Scheduling volunteers for non-profit

I'm working with a non-profit this fall that needs a scheduling system for their volunteer tax service. The closest match to their needs that I've been able to find is a module called "event with volunteer time slots" (http://drupal.org/project/volunteer_timeslots).

This limits current users to sign up for events. In our case, any individual will be able to be signed up by a handful of volunteers, so I need total freedom in putting a name into each time slot. Can I modify this module or install a new one that will meet this organization's needs?
