Cannot view, but can edit

I'm about 15 minutes old with this module (which I think should be part of core, btw), so forgive my ignorance.

I have a content type I want editors to be able to view and edit before publishing on the site. With VU installed and View Content Overview enabled, my editor role can see this content type and clicking "edit" gets them to something like http://mysite.org/node/229/edit?destination=admin/content . (This works too: http://fairmontschool.org/node/229/edit ) But going to the node directly to view it -- http://mysite.org/node/229 -- results in "Access Denied".

Why can this role not **view** the content?
