backlinks module not returning results -- maybe related to freelinking module

I have a wiki on my site. The backlinks module installs fine but doesn't return any results. I'm not really sure why. One reason I can think of is I'm using the freelinking module for my wiki -- perhaps that is interfering with backlinks?
My wiki is at:

Seems like it, although I don't know much about freelinking module.
The links are not actually to a node, they are to a freelinking url which redirects to the node url.
You need direct links to the node.

does this mean that if i linked throughout my site using each page's url alias instead of its node number, no backlinks will show up? Even though I am not freelinking, I seem to be having this same problem where i've enabled backlinks but no results return.
