Please do not release pre-releases as official releases! This will tell all Users using update_status (D5) or update (D6) module they must upgrade to this version. Update module have logics that will detect "other releases" and will offer them your alpha, beta, etc.
Take a look on the panels releases in update status and you will see how this is working...
THX.

hass commentedAdditional, please turn 5.x-1.2 back as the latest official release.

gregglesI disagree. Search the issue queue for reasons why.
hass commentedAlpha and Beta releases are not for production! What's wrong with this?
gregglesNobody is forcing you to install the update.
hass commentedPlease install update_status and then you will see what forces me to install pre-release software with BIG red banners and drupal_set_messages() on every click in administration area and drupal status page.
Pre-releases are pre-releases, contains bugs, are unstable and may kill my database while QA hasn't spend enough time on it yet. No one tells you not to release beta or alpha versions, but don't make it the official release, please. Update status will tell all people there is a newer version for testing and everyone looking on the homepage of pathauto will additional be able to download this pre-release if you link it in the text. Take a look to http://drupal.org/project/panels and see how this is well done.

gregglesThe 5.x-1.x versions of pathauto have many bugs in them as well, so saying that 5.x-2 isn't stable enough is just naive.
You also have an interesting definition of "force".
Pathauto had a banner like on Panels for about 3 months. The 5.x-2.x branch is now stable enough in my opinion to be worth promoting as official. If you want to see some bugs fixed then fix them rather than wasting time on this argument.
I'm leaving this active since you seem to feel that's necessary but I don't intend to follow your instructions on this issue.

hass commentedSomething that is blinking red in your eyes and looks like an critical error (red) on every second click you do in administration area and an additional email set to me every night telling i need to update asap - i think this "forces" me to do something - but as a bug punished admin i don't like installing alpha or beta software, while we all know how buggy they are. Maybe we need to redefine the word alpha or beta and their intention...

gregglesLargely due to http://drupal.org/node/184814 I've now changed this back.
/me goes to build a module that blinks red on hass' screen that says "send money to greggles" since blinking red must be obeyed.
