Let's work to re-roll and get #1064472: separate fields from field instances definitively committed so that we can nail down this part of the distribution. Marking as major because this affects nearly every other part of the distro - certainly every part that exports entity fields.

We've got a bit of a sticking point on the source issue in the Features queue. I've posted some test results: #1064472-39: separate fields from field instances

I'm trying to wrangle someone who knows Field API better than I to provide some guidance.
