paging for large sites, lotsa tags

I use free-tagging on a lot of regional news (grassroots journalism) sites. Is there an easy way to add some sort of paging mechanism to the site map page/module? I know I can turn that category off, but I really don't want to as I like the 'Index' of all the tags used. They're getting out of control now, though, and the page loads soooo slooooow.
