Maximum number of subdirectories should default to unlimited (0), it is currently set to 2. This means that when the user drills down to a sub-directory he/she losses the Mkdir button. the README file does not mention anything bout this either.

You only get that description you talking about when you hover over the field. Its neither in the form description title nor in README.txt

You can use an admin theme that displays field descriptions under the fields as usual.
