did you verify that payment.classes.inc is where it belongs, and is not corrupted?

yes the file is in the proper directory

it was working fine until I updated the module

I'd also make sure the file is not 0bytes in size which would indicate a corrupt file. Else it's something that should be research in the issue queue of the module in question. If the update caused it, other users would be reporting it in the queue and a fix may already be available in -dev
