Why do we have users and authors?
This seems to create potential problems where a user can post using someone else's profile.

jec006 commentedThe general use case is exactly that, that an editor can attribute a post to someone, or have multiple authors for blog posts and other things of that nature. It also makes it easier to show a list of authors (this is definitely do-able but tends to work out less ideally since often people will have users with say an author role, but who they don't want to list in the authors list on their site).
Hope that helps to clarify, its definitely not strictly necessary, but I think it opens up some use cases and provides a better UI for selecting the author to an editorial staff.

Probably the biggest push in local news these days is user-generated content, where you encourage people to blog, post events and announcements, etc. For me, the author block has been a source of confusion for some people.
I think I might just need to do a better job in my content types deciding which should display author and which should display user.
