I get this warning when creating or editing an image node:

warning: imagejpeg() [function.imagejpeg]: Unable to open 'files' for writing in /home/public_html/includes/image.inc on line 321.

And the exact-size cropping fails. I was able to replicate this on a fresh Drupal isntall as well. Image module 5.x-1.5
