As proposed by tsteingard in this issue, replacing "List" with a "Hide" checkbox that works inversely to the original one would not only ease the technical difficulties of having "List" checked by default, but would probably also be a usability improvement.

The actual changes to the code would be straightforward, only the upgrade path is going to be a bit more effort.

Feedback please! What do you think about this from a usability point of view?

Since this "Hide" feature request directly affects this issue that is occurring, it would be great to see some development on implementing it. :-)

This issue is now completely independent of the "Show 'List' option", as that has been removed and replaced by an "Always list files" option - and that is obviously completely independent of the nomenclature here. So, the upgrade path is no issue for this issue (heh), what is done here only depends on what we think is more appropriate, exchanging terms is trivial from the technical point of view.

Ok, I added a heuristic upgrade path that takes one of (possibly) multiple instances and ports its "Show List" option to the new "Always list files" option. As the latter is per field and the former is per widget, a fully accurate mapping is not possible, but for most cases it should be good enough. FIXED.
