Change the display of User Profile Page

I wish to change the view of the default /user/* page to display all fields that have been filled in by the registering user but to change some.
For example, one custom field contains a skype name, I want this to change the skype name into the Online/Offline/Away/Do Not Disturb Image (I have code for this).

However I cannot make the view display user data, just node or page content. What am I doing wrong?
