Search Terms does not work.

as far as i can tell; the Search Terms functionality does not work. tried with 7.x-3.5 and updated to latest -dev; same result.

i have a simple content view with a score field and score sort and filter of search terms - none of these do anything to the sql. i don't get anything in the output other than basic list of all node titles and changing score sort order has no impact (which makes sense since nothing related to search in the query).
