As a test I set my node to expire after 1 day. The cron ran ok and unpublished the node. It didn't send out the email notification though. Is there anything to check here?

Did you see any email message in the watchdog log?

The latest dev build has an improved fee calculation routine which is used in the cron hook to work out if an email needs to be sent. Give it a whirl.

Use devel module to re-route emails to the watchdog log.

I've just tested this again and it's working fine. Please re-open the issue if you think otherwise still.
