Quick version: What is better for blog SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Drupal or Wordpress?

Now, for those with some attention span, let me unpack this a little:

I AM NOT ASKING about the relative merits of each in terms of usability, etc, which I know is addressed elsewhere (i.e. I know Wordpress is easier for beginners if you just want a basic blog. . . and Drupal allows a lot more flexibility for different kinds fo content and expandability). I have already learned a lot about drupal, and I am trying to make the best choice for a blog with SEO front in mind.

Please assume for this discussion that the Wordpress modules and codes are being used so that robots will not follow links to duplicate pages (i.e. the same page listed with a url in archives, in categories, in rss feeds). I understand this to be the main difference between Drupal and Wordpress for SEO. Drupal taxonomy allows for more flexible category views and thus less duplication (correct?). So, if this issue is removed for Wordpress, do the two systems work equally well for SEO (again, specifically for BLOGS only).? Is there anything else that makes one significantly better than the other?

Thanks.

I think that either WordPress or Drupal will work for SEO. I prefer Drupal for a few reasons that I outlined in this post:
http://drupalzilla.com/blogs/10-reasons-drupal-seo-cms

They include:

  • URL control - the pathauto module combined with taxonomy gives you a lot more control over URL structure than you can get with WordPress.
  • Taxonomy - more power than WP's categories/tags
  • Custom content types and Views - This is the killer combination that makes Drupal great.
  • Power - Maybe later you will want more features like advanced user management, multiple blogs, custom content types, custom views, etc. If you build with Drupal you can start with a basic blog and add advanced features later.
  • Easier theming - I hate searching through multiple WordPress themes for what I'm looking for. Drupal's theme files are much easier: page.tpl.php, node.tpl.php, block.tpl.php, etc.

If you might want to extend your site in the future, Drupal is a better choice. Either system will work for creating a search-engine-friendly site though.
