How can I safely enable gzip compression? I have used many ways to enable it, but none of them worked as well as they should.

So, how can I enable gzip compression in drupal? [hosted enviroment with access to a modified php.ini]

After migration from 4.7 to 5.x we have lost the way to enable gzip compression. It doesn't work by default for for our shared hosting env with drupal 5
