According to this, it it possible to make this work with a fluid width theme:

Could you please implement this? And in the mean time, is there anything I can do to make this work with a fluid theme?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've attached a patch that should give you the ability to use dynamic column widths. Have a test and let me know if it works for you.
