On dev desktop on a mac OXS 10.8 connecting to a 11.10 ubuntu server with ssl I was getting an http code of 0 and a file size of 0. Tweaking some curl options makes it work because the automatically detected ssl version was incorrect.

Patch.

Wait, what, I thought SSL v2 is weak and should be extinct.

Maybe so. I guess that would just mean that this shouldn't need to be a variable?

https://www.trustworthyinternet.org/ssl-pulse/ says 30% of the ~180,000 sites were still serving on SSL 2.0.

Also, just to be clear, it's the client-side php on a coworker's laptop that was old in my case and the server is newer :) Committed http://drupalcode.org/project/stage_file_proxy.git/commit/6d7fa0f

Is this issue still exists?

Anyway I couldn't apply patch for 7.x-1.x.

I think it's fixed, because there is an admin interface where I can adjust SSL version.
