Hi,

I need some help figuring out which modules to get for Drupal, or if there is a different CMS that would work better. I'm looking for an open source CMS. I've looked all over this website many times, but still feel slightly confused about the best options for my group. I would love to hear any ideas/feedback that you have about Drupal modules that would work for what I need or other content management systems that would work.

My group is a local group that spans a large county. We currently have a static, mostly unused website and three yahoo groups. The purpose of the new website will be to primarily facilitate face to face gatherings, but there will also be a lot of online communication. (We might keep one yahoo group for part of the online communication as people are used to that.) There are many different types of people in the group and we have occasional events for everyone, but it's very important that people be able to only invite specific groups of people to events as well.

I need:

  • Profiles with customizable fields
  • Invitation system that lets members invite people based on those profile fields (for example, invite everyone in a certain age range, or in a certain part of town, or with certain interests.)
  • Invitation system that emails people
  • Calendar tied in with the invitation system and displays events from the invitations (or vice versa- calendar that you can send out invitations from)
  • Calendar that has a public and member only view.
  • Blog that has a public and member only view
  • In addition, I'd like:

  • Invitation system with easy RSVP capabilities
  • Individual ability to block other members
  • Ability for members to rate other members' discussions posts or blog posts as spam, inappropriate, best of etc... like on craigslist
  • Blog comments that look like a threaded discussion
  • Discussion board
  • Wiki
  • This would be a Bonus:

  • If the invitation system which lets members invite people based on fields in the profile only lets them invite people for groups they are a part of (for example, invite people in an age range that they are included in.)
  • Wiki that only certain groups can see (based on profile fields)
  • Ability to subscribe to blog based on tag/category
  • If the Discussion Board had a similar look to Vanilla
  • Thank you for any and all advice!

you want to know if it does it out of the box-(upon installation)... well there is a learning curve in order to customize and configure exactly to what you are asking for ...at least for the more specific requests..
.a good resource is the podcast/article on top 40 projects by lullabot that could shed some light over all about the flexibility

My specific thought on some of what you asked: if i don't mention module - then it is out of box ready
yes # Profiles with customizable fields

it is possible# Invitation system that lets members invite people based on those profile fields (for example, invite everyone in a certain age range, or in a certain part of town, or with certain interests.)

RSVP Module....User Interface needs a little rough# Invitation system that emails people

yes Event Module + RSVP ModuleCalendar tied in with the invitation system and displays events from the invitations (or vice versa- calendar that you can send out invitations from)

yes there is a Calender Module and modules that extend its abilityCalendar that has a public and member only view.

yes, you can create content types...i.e blog1, blog2 give univeral permission for blog 1 and exclusive permission for blog 2....Using the Views Module and the Taxonomy(Categories) # Blog that has a public and member only view

    In addition, I'd like:
RSVP Module i think there is another option for this as well Invitation system with easy RSVP capabilities
yes very simpleIndividual ability to block other members

five star module--flag content moduleAbility for members to rate other members' discussions posts or blog posts as spam, inappropriate, best of etc... like on craigslist
yepBlog comments that look like a threaded discussion

do you mean forum? there is one included out of the box but not a traditional UIDiscussion board

yes Book Node (content type) is good option for a Wiki ....a lot of flexibility...WIKI

    This would be a Bonus:
I am sure you can- you may need a little customizingIf the invitation system which lets members invite people based on fields in the profile only lets them invite people for groups they are a part of (for example, invite people in an age range that they are included in.)

you can limit people by roles that you create...i.e. Editor...or People with Blonde Hair...etc and then give them access permissions Wiki that only certain groups can see (based on profile fields)

notify module, subscribe module Ability to subscribe to blog based on tag/category

hmm don;t know what you mean If the Discussion Board had a similar look to Vanilla
