I am trying to configure the module and I see two settings that suggest they do the exact same thing. The settings are "Auto-subscribe to new content" and "Notify poster of own posts". They both seem to subscribe you to the content that you create. So what is the difference between them?

I believe the difference is that if you are subscribed to something, and you modify it, the 'notify poster of own posts' option will send you a notification even if YOU change it. If you disable it, you will only get notified if someone else modifies something you are subscribed to.

I'm not sure it can be explained better in more words. Both options do exactly what they say...

Auto-subscribe ON = create a page/thread/node subscription for you when you create/edit a node or comment
notify poster of own posts OFF = suppress notifications about what YOU do but keep sending them about what others do, IF you're subscribed
