Sub domain module will do that as I recall.
Also look at domain access module for more complicated subdomain set ups.

I haven't used subdomain but
I haven't used subdomain but by the looks of it, it's not too complicated.
I would use taxonomy as the element for subdomain to use.
- Add a term reference field to the account creation form
- Use unique field to prevent users trying to use a subdomain already in use.
Or alternatively organic groups if there isn't the option to limit subdomain to a particular vocab.
