Hi, for my project I use VPS. For an ecommerce VPS is the right choice IMHO.

if your site has no traffic yet, better start with good vps (not cheap but junk one) and gradually upgrade to dedicated when it can't handle the traffic.

if you can use drupal why use others?

I would suggest a scalable VPS. Start with a smaller one and as your traffic increases you can add resources to it without having to perform a migration from shared to VPS hosting.

It's hard to say without really knowing the site, and the growth plans. Small Drupal eCommerce sites can easily be hosted on a shared hosting account, without any problem. However if you start to see a bit more traffic, or need to optimize system services, than it certainly may be worthwhile to spend the extra money on a quality VPS service.

If you expect seeing anything more than say 1,000 visitors a day, I would recommend going for a VPS. Anything more than that on a shared host may cause you to get suspended for too much resource use.
