They say put in maintenance mode but was in the point of that when during upgrade files are missing in process and visitors would end up seeing an error page anyway?

I've not tested the following idea but it may be a possibility if someone is that consciencious about the update/upgrade process. one method may be to drop in an index.html file and upload index.php last.

great idea VM! and much simpler. I now know how to upload site from localhost to live server but made me think of this because seemed to take me forever- next time will be much quicker...of course if i bothered to learn command line it would hardly be a blip of down time.
