I started with the 6.x-1.2 version. It did show the dropdown, but there were no settings for which menu to use (it seems that maybe it only works with the core Primary?). I read the note about using the latest release candidate. So, I installed the rc8 release candidate and got the problem with the administration settings page. Finally, I switched to the latest dev version. Now when I visit admin/build/menu/item/%/edit I no longer see the dropdown that was at the bottom of the page before.
The administration theme is Garland.

damienmckennaYou need to go to the Menu MiniPanels settings page to see if the menu you wish you use has been enabled. If you're *still* not seeing it, please re-open the issue and we can discuss it further.

vegantriathleteI did have that menu selected to work with menu mini panels.
This is probably a duplicate of the issue reported for D7. I think what I'm running into is that I'm also using menu attributes (6.x-2.0-beta1). If I disable menu attributes I do see the dropdown and the mini panel does who when I hover over that menu item.
The suggested solution to the D7 conflict was to use the dev release. Let me see what I can use in D6. It looks like there is a patch against the 1.x branch.

vegantriathleteUpdate: I manually patched the 6.x-2.0-beta1 branch of Menu Attributes and it fixes the problem.
I have filed a new issue with Menu Attributes.
