I have a menu block, I've had it working on other websites and as far as I can tell, I have it set up the same. It will show the top level menu items and their children, but if I set it to show just the secondary children it shows nothing, i've even tried different themes. Driving me crazy, can anyone help?

check menu expanded settings
Are you using superfish or another module to display, or the core menu block?
Try checking the menu links - make sure the parent link is set as 'expanded'

Yes its got superfish in the theme which I'm not using and i've made sure they're all expanded
Needs clarification
Sorry if I'm misunderstanding you-
You have the superfish module enabled but you aren't using it.
So does that mean you are using a standard menu block?
If you are just using a standard block and the menu links are marked as expanded you should see them, but a standard menu block doesn't offer options to show links starting from the 2nd level, so...
Maybe you can list the options/settings for the block you are using?
Do you have a link to a page showing the problem?

I'm using Superfish in the man navigation, then I have a categories menu at the top to and there will be sub-links in that menu that I want to show on the left of the page. its worked on my other websites, i can't seem to fathom what I've done differently. These are my settings.
Menu: Categories
Starting level: 2nd Level (it show all of them if I set this to 1st)
Starting level will be: Active menu item (I've tried both here and still no joy)
Maximum depth: Unlimited
Expanded All Children [ticked]
that's it, thanks
okay i'm getting a clue here
okay i'm getting a clue here - you have 2 menu blocks? primary then a 2nd in the sidebar that shows sublinks.
I don't usually use superfish for that second block - i use menu_block http://drupal.org/project/menu_block
but - active menu item is the menu item of the primary navigation - in this case your main menu, not your categories menu.
you could try going to admin/structure/menu/settings and change the primary menu to your categories menu...that may work.
otherwise try menu_block
