Side Content and Markdown filter

I have enabled the Markdown filter for use on Page node types. I notice in the side content, if I use Markdown syntax it works. But the next time I edit the node, the side content is no longer Markdown and instead is HTML. I'd like to get Markdown syntax back when editing the node.
