and let them choose the password.

Isn't that the default behaviour in configuration/account settings? The user gets an e-mail with a link that they can click to login and choose a new password. I think if you want them to choose a password at first, then you have to change the setting to visitors only, and keep require e-mail verification checked.

Nope as far as i can see.. visitors can register and get the password in the email ( and change it after logging in ) or they can choose their password but they don't have to verify the email.

New users will be required to validate their e-mail address prior to logging into the site, and will be assigned a system-generated password. With this setting disabled, users will be logged in immediately upon registering, and may select their own passwords during registration.

But than again we could just use LoginToboggan :)

Title:Require e-mail verification when a visitor creates an account» Change sign up settings to match designed form (create password on account creation)

The login was designed with first name, last name, password, email and a captcha

Updating the title to reflect this.

The benefit of them choosing their password is they can automatically be signed in and can start using it right away (currently they ahve to go back to their email, set a password etc).

Pending themeing, the form now looks like https://www.evernote.com/shard/s26/sh/368ef6dd-d1e5-4a25-b96c-5a0ba23cde... (shown here with Mollom configured to appear on the user registration form).
