Isn't that the default behaviour in configuration/account settings? The user gets an e-mail with a link that they can click to login and choose a new password. I think if you want them to choose a password at first, then you have to change the setting to visitors only, and keep require e-mail verification checked.

Nope as far as i can see.. visitors can register and get the password in the email ( and change it after logging in ) or they can choose their password but they don't have to verify the email.
But than again we could just use LoginToboggan :)

Updating the title to reflect this.
The benefit of them choosing their password is they can automatically be signed in and can start using it right away (currently they ahve to go back to their email, set a password etc).

I'm still trying to figure out how to properly do things,, but I believe these issues are related.
