(This is a joomla template and I'm wondering if there's a simple way to create this in drupal)

I just managed to get this slider rebuilt using the Dynamic Display block module:
http://drupal.org/project/ddblock

it requires some adjustment in the CSS and javascript/jquery coding. I'm not done yet, but looks promissing. just in case anybody else want to build a custom slider.
