I am currently looking to build a new ecommerce website and I have investigated the options only to confuse myself.
I have built multiple sites using shared hosting, I am now looking for a solution that can handle more complexity, larger traffic volumes and I require root access.
I am looking for a solution that is scalable, so I can upgrade to larger plans as my site traffic and complexity requires it without the need to migrate the whole site to a new platform. Reliability, speed and availability are a high priority.
I have an initial budget of $40 per month and I expect to pay more as the site grows and traffic increases.
I have basic linux skills and would prefer a managed service, although I will also look at unmanaged or partial managed options as I am prepared to learn.
Any advice that could be supplied would be greatly appreciated.

You should look for a managed
You should look for a managed cloud type of setup, also a virtual or dedicated private server.
These providers offer managed application clouds and drupal support, this is the best way to go in terms of security, scaling out and managed services. Also fits your budget.

I recommend a managed VPS
For the price, I think you'll get the most value out of a managed VPS. You'll have more control over your environment and more direct support available to you when you have questions. If you're new to managing servers, that's a very important thing to take into consideration. With services like Amazon, you'll have support for the server instance itself and very little support for the software you run on the server.
With Pantheon, it's not a traditional server - so the tradeback is in reverse. You'll have support over the software, but little control over the server and how it operates. If you're planning E-commerce, you'll have to go with their Pro plan which is $100/month right out of the gate.
We have Managed VPS's that can get down right at your monthly budget if you pay a little in advance and/or use a coupon code (CYBER20 will get you 20% off). You'll get more value for the price, more control, and you can pick up the phone and ask us questions.
Hopefully that helps!
Thanks,
Andy
