STAY AWAY FROM FREEHOSTIA.COM!

Based on a recommendation someone made in this forum, i purchased a ten dollar registration of domain name. this would also give me hosting privileges. after purchasing, the receipt has a user name on it and informed me that a welcome email would give me a password and all the rest to access my site within 24 hours. you guessed right, it came and went. the site was registered in my name and a bare bones thing was put up, but i cant get to it. the next week has been spent trying to contact support for help, nothing. can get on the forum because you need a password, get cant a password because the site doesn't recognize the username it gave me or the email addy that was on the receipt, no direct number. it has an address in florida that is not listed. the email support@freehostia.com gives no response. in order words, i am f^*@ed. losing the ten dollars is not so bad, but having my domain name tied up for who knows how long is extremely frustration.
surfing the web for something else. i just happened to find a site that gives complete info on sites and found out who the true registrar is, ENOM. Someone posted on another topic that they contacted ENOM to get back control of their domain name but it cost them 30 dollars to do so. i just called them an hour ago and the lady said that freehostia.com phone number they have has been disconnected. she said an email has been sent to them and if they dont respond within 24 hours. i can pay 30 dollars (because they deal with resellers) to get back in control of my domain name without having to wait the 60 day mandatory and point it to the host of my choice. so altogether, i will have paid 40 dollars to get my domain name unlocked and properly registered. i will still have to pay for hosting!
i dont know what is going on at freehostia.com, maybe someone died, or skipped town. i have no idea if anyone has read my emails or complaints, but they screwed me up. even a reponse at this date has given me more stress than i need. they need to be shut down to keep other folks from purchasing names and hosting packages, i nearly bought a 30 dollar hosting package from them before I had gotten my welcome email from the free one, but i decided to wait. dodged a bullet!

contacting the real registrar, ENOM, was the key to hearing from freehostia.com , they finally sent me the info necessary to activate my site. after the 60 days, however, i am out of freehostia.com.

always best policy to register your own domain name with a bonafied registar.

Learned that the hard way a few years ago. If your hosting company has control of your domain, it's very difficult to move to another host if things go south. I register all my domains with NameCheap now (better than GoDaddy, IMO).

Sorry to hear of your troubles with them. Hereafter please ask for more reviews about the Domain Registrar and the Hosting Provider in number of forums. These would help you a lot.

I am using FreeHostia and have to say I've found the customer service to be excellent. Maybe you just had bad luck.

The only problem i've had is my site (Mayer roulette system) going down quite a lot. But value for money is good.

A best practice in web hosting is register Domain separately with your web hosting service provider. This will avoid a lot of potential issue in the future - such as the one you have met.

Hello,

I'm just wondering, how did you decide to contact us over email ? Check out this: http://www.freehostia.com/support.html
We never stated to contact us by email directly. There is ticketing system and there is online contact form. The reason we use this - as these days spam bots are sending a LOT of spam. support@domain is very common email and it is basically in 100% of the spam lists. All they need is the domain name and then they send spam to support@domain. Sending an email to support[@]freehostia.com is really not a good way to contact us, because your email can get in our spam filter. But if you use our online contact form or ticketing system - you will receive an answer for sure. Please next time do not panic and send emails randomly without reading the top main links of the site you are trying to contact. This will save you a lot of headache, time and money.

Regards,
FreeHostia.com Staff
