How to keep menu system in place for pages that shouldn't be children

Hello, we've been using Menu Block Split for a website, and for the most part it's exactly what we need. It will be a very content-rich site and the client has 2 (as of now) cases where they want the module to work differently:

In this case, they will have hundred of sites listed, and they want to be able to go to a destination (ex - http://www.blindmicemedia.com/dev/dublin/staging/node/66) and have the menu system still intact up to the level of "Sites and Buildings" but without needing to create (and subsequently view) a child item to do so.

The same applies - they will eventually have lots of press releases, and when you go to one (ex - http://www.blindmicemedia.com/dev/dublin/staging/node/59) they want the menu system to still be there, but without all the releases having to be in the menu as children for it to be so.

I'm wondering if this can be fixed with CSS, or if there is a better way by altering the module code in some way.
