I have the contact form for each user disabled because I'm using Privatemsg for it but the link still displays for each user (comment or thread) and clicking on it gives an Ajax error (I'm using modal forms for contact).

I don't see any errors. You should post that Ajax errors if you want help.

Anyway, Ajax errors are probably produces by module other than AF.

My issue is not the Ajax error but the button being displayed even when the contact form is disabled for all users by default.
