Problem/Motivation

Maintainence of Fusion and Fusion Accellerator has frozen while other base themes have gained support and momentum.

Proposed resolution

Switch Mix and Match to a new, responsive base theme. Primary candidates: AdaptiveTheme, Omega. Lead candidate: AdaptiveTheme. From the maintainer (#1372052-11: Upgrade Mix and match to Fusion 2.x and Fusion Accelerator):

I've been setting up test versions on AdaptiveTheme and Omega for comparison. Omega is a terrific base theme but I think the configuration options on AdaptiveTheme are a bit closer to what Fusion has so I'm planning to release that one, and then have it work with Skinr for block styles. I just think it will be a little less disruptive for folks that are used to Fusion. I've also worked with Zen and while it's responsive version is very good too, again it just is very different from what I had set up with Mix and Match and Fusion. Although please feel free to weigh in if you have any specific thoughts about any of the base themes.

Remaining tasks

  • Create a new branch.
  • Rewrite the theme to use AdaptiveTheme.
  • Adjust/adapt color module support.
  • Adjust/adapt Skinr support.

This is almost complete, and will be released in the next couple weeks. I am not using the color module, though. But otherwise, it will be based on AdaptiveTheme and does include Skinr support.

I think AdaptiveTheme would be a great choice. Zen and Omega are great for site-specific, custom themes, while AdaptiveTheme offers extensive and simple to understand configurability, making it a good choice for a flexible contributed theme like Mix and Match.

We like Mix and Match and use it in the Open Outreach distro but have switched our main base theme from Fusion to AdaptiveTheme, see #1561806: Introduce new base theme and subthemes for Open Outreach. We produced a new AdaptiveTheme subtheme, Outreach, and plan to upgrade our Granada theme to AdaptiveTheme, #1789376: Produce new branch of Granada based on AdaptiveTheme. If you go with AdaptiveTheme, we'll be able to keep Mix and Match after we remove Fusion.

I'm ready to use Mix and match on a drupal 7 site as soon as the AT version will be released.
On November 28, 2012 you said that it will be released in 2 weeks, so I feel like you're going to release it very soon now, well I hope, can't wait, thanks!

So sorry for the delay. Reworking the theme for a new base theme required more of an effort than I anticipated. It was really a total rewrite from the ground up. But I put out the first release today, so please download and give it a try.

I've tried to test it pretty well, but the options available as part of AT are so extensive that there is no way to cover everything. So I hope folks can give some feedback and help find problems. It is fairly different if you are used to working with Fusion-based themes. Some options are lost due to the switch, but you'll also gain a number of new options and I think overall it is a more flexible theme now.

I'm going to try it now and will report in case I see anything, really thank you again, I love mix and match on D6, there's no need for another theme when we have mix and match!
