Right now the link for uploaded .pdf files show up as the full filename. Is there any way to have these links show up either as only a .pdf icon or the letters PDF for example?

Currently, no, but it would be a fairly simple feature to implement. Remind me again in a few weeks if I don't update this thread by then...
