Issue Summary
While I appreciate that the module is now optional, maybe install them on hook install? Or provide some strong recommendation?
Without that module the field that is left there is unlabeled and very small.

Even with date_popup_authored, the usability here is still quite poor. There is no message that the field should be left blank if the current date/time should be used. Also, if only a date is entered, this leads to an ugly error. The positioning of these fields directly above the publish button causes them to be much more prominent than on the standard drupal node create interface.

Sounds reasonable. I pushed a change to only apply the special altering when the Date Popup Module to be installed.
