ubercart - storing a product kit as new product

We are setting up an experimental site that enables the combination of a set of (energy saving) solutions in a new 'product'.
We use the ubercart module to find/select possible solutions from existing cases.
It should be able to store te final selection (in the cart) as a new case for future reference.

My idea is to use (a variant) of the checkout function to do this, but at the moment I have no clue how to handle this.

Any hints toward a solution are welcome,
