Is upgrading from 5.2 to 53. necessary?

kmoney - October 24, 2007 - 16:15

Hello,

i am using drupal 5.2. Recently I have had problems with the server getting too slow. That was probably caused by too many comment spams. Now I deactivated the comment functions.

Is it necessary for security measures to upgrade from 5.2. to 5.3? would that also solve the server problems? (my provider closed my website because of too high CPU usage...)

Thanks
Klaus

Yes, update...

there are security issues in 5.2, according to the release notes-- so you should upgrade.

thanks for your advice. Where do I find exact upgrade instructions?

I am using a lot of modules, how can I make sure, that all those modules remain installed and as well their preferences? I cant re-do all my module preferences.

Thanks
kmoney

settings for the modules are stored in the DB your data should be fine. However always create a back up just in case.

yes

would that also solve the server problems?

not likely. Depending on the amount of modules you have enabled, this could very well be where your resouce usage is most taxing.

Some modules with CPU intensivity

Two core modules that leap to mind when controlling how much CPU your site uses:

Search
Statistics

Another one that is a huge resource drain:

Hi kmoney,

I have also some problems with the performance of the drupal system.
For me it looks that the block rendering is extreme CPU intensive.
I installed the block cache module http://drupal.org/project/blockcache
which creates a cached block for every block on your site. You can configure each block to be a cached block for all or a cached block for each of your user so you can even cache the menu block with the user name on top.
This had a really good impact on the site performance.

You should give it a try!

Roi Danton
